The painter Johannes Zierneels was born in ‘s Hertogenbosch.
Zierneels travelled to Rome in 1671. According to Hoogewerff he was a member of the Bentvueghels in 1674/75, and he is documented in Rome until 1678. His Bent name was Lely. Evidence for his membership can be found on a guest list, made on the occasion of the inauguration of three new members; Abraham Genoels, François Moens and Pieter Verbruggen (II).
Most likely Johannes Zierneels died in Rome. Hardly anything is left of his work, but he is known to have made a series of paintings about the marters of Gorinchem. (SR)
